Masters of Disaster

The past year has brought about unimaginable challenges, from the Taal Volcano eruption to the COVID-19 global pandemic. To help secure humanity’s survival during these uncontrollable disasters, the JCI Senate Manila Board of Directors conceived an online event, Masters of Disaster, which aims to prepare people for the effects of war, extreme natural hazards, and other unexpected disasters.

The event’s guest speaker, Dr. Ted Esguerra is a wilderness and expedition doctor of both the Philippine Mt. Everest Team and the Voyage of the Balangay, segment host of the TV and radio show “Red Alert”, and author of the survival book “Readiness in Emergencies and Disasters.” Dr. Esguerra conducted an extensive lecture, elaborately discussing the ways to prepare for unexpected disasters. Since these catastrophic events are almost always unpredictable, he also talked about what to do in the midst of a calamity. He emphasized that your survival tomorrow greatly depends on your preparations today, sharing his own personal experience and tips in dealing with unavoidable tragedies.

Furthermore, he tackled the possible effects of a cataclysmic event to the community – creating a dog eat dog world where people’s panic is palpable. And so, to ensure your family’s safety, it is crucial to keep a clear head despite the chaos around you and make sure that you have sufficient resources. It is also vital to be mindful of your surroundings since people, fueled by fear, tend to be desperate in securing supplies during calamities.

With the philosophy of extending help to the Filipinos especially in times of crisis, Masters of Disaster is not the first project of JCI Senate Manila centered around the people’s welfare, nor will it be the last.
